IRRITAINMENT: Entertainment and media spectacles that are annoying but you find yourself unable to stop watching them.
I received this word in a list of other cheeky words and definitions earlier this week via email. I find it to be particularly relevant to what we are doing here at MediaSlackers.com and it amazingly describes about 90% of the “news” we receive on a daily basis. Now of course this depends on how diligent you are in informing yourself of world happenings, but if you depend on major media (TV, newspapers, magazines, etc.) to inform you (note there is nothing proactive in this action of “informing”), you can expect to be entertained, but not informed. Unfortunately, this is what media have decided makes money and to some extent they are right! But for one day, try putting aside the remote control, fire up your browser and go looking for “alternative” channels to get your news. You’ll be amazed how many are out there and how much you will learn… Just don’t expect to be entertained or see Britney’s putty-tat (more on this over the weekend).
