As I’ve mentioned before, my father is a photojournalist and editor. Having grown up with a darkroom in our basement, I remember watching him develop prints from an early age (with that lovely smell of chemicals which is unavoidable and unforgettable). I often find that photos speak to me more than words often do. I have the feeling I’m not alone in this belief, so I want to draw your attention to some amazing photographs presented in this year’s “Photos of the Year” awards from Editor and Publisher. You can see the nicely arranged flash presentation here.

19 Journalists in Total were Arrested During the RNC
September 6th, 2008 — Free Speech
Editor & Publisher just wrapped up the arrest count of journalists in MN, just like the MN police wrapped up free speech. 19 journalists in total were arrested throughout the week, including the four we mentioned on Tuesday.
The NY Times asks “Is Jon Stewart the Most Trusted Man in News?”
August 16th, 2008 — Daily Show, Jon Stewart, New York Times, praise
Sunday’s New York Times will feature a very large A&E piece asking (and affirming) Jon Stewart as the most trusted man in news. We wouldn’t go so far as to say Stewart reports the news (Bill Moyers comes to mind as a more probable candidate for “truthiness”, along with a half dozen other well-respected, lesser-known journalists), but Stewart’s popularity and ability to bring the truth (along with a bit of comedy) to an audience who is otherwise left with CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC and Faux News is still refreshing, candid and better than most. Kudos to him and keep up the good work. If nothing else, he encourages us all to think a bit more.
