Ken Silverstein vs. The Clintons and again, a Nigerian dictator comes into the fray

Unfortunately for truth’s sake, I have a feeling that Ken Silverstein is going to lose out on his bid to hold the Clinton’s to their desire for “transparency” in Hillary’s nomination process as Secretary of State. Silverstein, Harper’s Washington editor, makes some very valid points in questioning the relationships that exist between the Clinton’s and donors to the Clinton Foundation.

The latest individual not available for scrutiny under Clinton’s desire for “transparency” is the feel-good “Gilbert Chagoury, who is one of the very biggest contributors, having tossed in somewhere between $1 million and $5 million” to the Clinton Foundation. Silverstein has requested information from the Foundation about exactly how much and when these donations were made, but so far they have been unwilling to disclose this information. Chagoury is such a cuddly character because of his many friends around the world including,

“Nigerian General Sani Abacha, who seized power in a coup and ruled from 1993 to 1998. During those years, Chagoury received oil concessions and large-scale government construction contracts, and allegedly offered Abacha help with his financial affairs.”

It gets even better than that and, although this is unlikely to make many headlines in any major papers (and certainly Katie Couric won’t be coached on the proper pronunciation of Chagoury’s name), Silverstein is guaranteed to stay on top of it. This Mass Media Self-Love, combined with its obsession with the Election, is too Dirty for Public Consumption

Everyone seems to be talking about the election these days. Everyone seems to be talking about who each respective candidate will select as his VP of choice. Everyone seems to be talking about how important it is that McCain state how many houses he owns or that Obama state that his really isn’t a Muslim.

However, “everyone” is not the American voters, TV viewers, newspaper readers or your 4th-grade teacher. “Everyone” is just the media, media and more media. I know it is the Olympic season, but I believe there is an event to see who can speculate the most on something that only the speculators care about. When did journalism become a game of guess-volley-pass, guess-volley-pass?!? The only ones who really care about what the New York Times, NBC, FOX, or anyone else masquerading to represent “everyone” are talking about are the same people writing and saying these things. The rest of the American public is going about its day. Why, when fewer than half of Americans eligible to vote actually do so, does the media think they care who Obama’s VP pick will be?

Ken Silverstein, from Harper’s Magazine, has posted a synopsis of a great interview he conducted with Chris Lehmann from CQ and BookForum on the “‘Moronic’ Campaign Coverage and the ‘Press Bubble.’” Here is an excerpt:

“1. I’ve seen many recent headlines about the alleged “feverish speculation” about who the vice presidential nominees are going to be. Is the public really all that interested in these sorts of campaign issues at this point, or is the fever largely confined to the media?

The reporters and editors who are composing these inane pieces are pretty much talking to each other. I saw a Washington Post headline the other day, “Who’s No. 2? Obama Keeps Everybody Guessing.” No—the “everybody” in that construction is you. Imagine if you were covering the baseball playoffs and you wrote that there was massive speculation about who was going to win. It’s manifestly moronic because you’re writing about a scheduled event that is going to take place on a known timeline. You’re contributing nothing.”

Ken Silverstein: “Media Makes Shocking Discovery: McCain Surrounded by Lobbyists”

Ken Silverstein, Washington Editor for Harper’s Magazine and acclaimed investigative journalist took his Memorial Day to write about one of this country’s decorated war veterans and how he has lost his way in serving the people, to instead serve private interests. Below is an excerpt from his blog, but please read his latest piece in Harper’s titled, “My lobby, myself: How John McCain’s hypocrisy is laundered as reform.”

“Over the past few weeks, the media has finally begun reporting the fairly obvious fact that there are a whole bunch of lobbyists working closely with the campaign of Senator John McCain. As a result, a number of lobbyists with embarrassing ties to foreign governments have been forced out of the McCain camp, like Doug Goodyear, whose firm lobbied for the Burmese dictatorship a few years back.”

Silverstein goes on to mention another worthy piece recently written by the Washington Post’s Michael D. Shear and Jeffrey H. Bimbaum about McCain’s man in Washington, the 30-year lobbyist Charles R. Black, Jr.
